There’s much at stake in this year’s Fairfax County election. The county remains an economic powerhouse in Northern Virginia but continues to deal with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Home values have risen, leaving many residents with higher annual tax bills. Offices are vacant and some retail areas aren’t back to pre-pandemic levels of activity, stifling commercial tax revenue. Meanwhile, schools are crowded, neighborhoods need revitalizing, and the demand for mental health counseling and other social services is up — all requiring more spending.
